So about how much does a small tattoo cost? Say about 2" by 1" in a couple of colors. Just an approximate amount so I'll know if it's even worth checking into right now.

When I got mine they really charged more for the time than the size.

So a very intricate tattoo, even though small, might cost more than one the same size which was less intricate.

I think what I have in mind would be fairly simple. There's a new tattoo shop really close by (which is odd, as it is actually illegal to get a tattoo in this state) but I always think about calling them after they're already closed. Other people on my lj vouch for them, and it's probably where I'll go. I just can't seem to stop by when they're actually open. Plus I hate to waste their time if it's not something I can afford anyway.

South Carolina?

Yes, it would be best to talk to them, they'll be able to give you the most accurate answer since they'd be doing it.

Oklahoma. Home of cockfighting. No tattooing or lottery though. Right over the border in Arkansas there are a jillion little tattoo shops, but I'm always in a hurry to or from somewhere when I pass them.

Which was all my way of saying, "Damned if I remember!" That was over six years ago and I've slept and stuff since then.

I think that it cost me about $90. I think.

Hello,

Ball park cost will be between $70 to $150 depending on how complex, how many colors, and if it is a "name" tattoo artist. Also, is it an original design or standard wall flash? If it is an original design are you providing the art or is the tattoo artist supposed to do that? And believe it or not if you provide the art, and it is something different you might get a price break as many tattoo artist gets so tired of doing the same old standard tats.

The most important thing is to be sure and see pictures of actual tattoos does by the artist. Especially ones similar to what you want and in similar locations. Also, ask are they going to make a stencil and transfer it on or they going to freehand it. If it is to be a freehand be sure and see photos of other freehand work done by the same artist. If you have any more questions either I or littleegypt (Cleo) can probably answer them.

eric will most likely charge you $40 - $80, depending on the piece...
i know he does simple kanji for $40, but, once again, you'll have to go in and talk to him...
he can do a custom piece for you or you can come in with a drawing...
he's awesome at the custom stuff, btw...
most of my back is his own design - i just gave him pictures of the symbols & gave him a general idea of what i wanted & he freehanded the vines & stuff on there!
tell him you know me & the "others"!
um... k - you ARE going to eric, you know...

'k. I get paid Tuesday. If it's generally under $100 I can probably do it this month.

Your back does look really great, btw.

With luck we won't all get arrested. If we do, I'll tell them you're my lawyer. :-)

Depends on the design...and the artist. Here are the things you need to check out before getting a tattoo.
First - ask to see photos of previous tatoos by the prospective artists
Secondly - Ask to talk to previous customers
Thirdly - be absolutely certain that there is an autoclave on the premises and that the artist opens a brand new package of needles for every single customer and discards them after use.
Wish I could say more...but I'm on a time limit, fifteen minute parking space...net cafe'... etc.

I've seen actual tattoos by this guy and they look very good. I will, of course, make sure of the sterilization and all. I'll send you a picture when it's all done. You'll laugh, I'm sure.

Yeah, what she said. Autoclave? Definitely. New, unopened, sterile needles? Absolutely. I'm concerned about the ink as well. It either needs to be from an uncontaminated source or autoclaved itself (would autoclaving damage ink? I dunno). Tattooing is essentially surgery and needs the same attention to sterile procedures as surgery in my opinion. Sterile procedures are not difficult but, there are many little details to consider. I'm certainly not trying to discourage you from getting a tattoo but, please be careful.

ooh! me too!

I have wanted to get one, but I'm both paranoid and picky.

Paranoid in that I'd probably demand that I be allowed to run the autoclave, be shown the seal on the ink bottle being broken, likewise with the needles...

Picky in that I wanted it in ink that was visible only under UV light. I wanted a very particular effect: A bar code on the wrist (my SSN, natch), and circuit board traces below and behind one ear.

Fortunately, wise people told me to avoid this (http://www.bme.freeq.com/spc/experiences/glow/). The ink is visible in normal light, and even turns brown. Not to mention cases of persistent irritation that lead to the disconinued use of UV-fluorescent inks.

Eric is da man. If I haven't given you a card yet, let me know and I will. I swear he undercharges, so it shouldn't be too bad. I think I know what you're getting and I doubt it will be very expensive (I'm betting $50-ish). Just go by there and get a quote. Not a waste of their time, they expect people to do that. And yes, new needles and an autoclave. He even has an antique autoclave on the front counter for show. As for the ink, he puts it into ink cups, so no, your ink will never have touched anyone else's needle. He's very clean and quite the cool cat. Oh wait, Cat would be his wife. hahahaha, that was awful. lol Good luck!
