I feel so shallow. I checked out a friend's blog tonight and he's got all this commentary on the news and politics, religion, current events, etc. It's interesting and relevant. I just use my LJ to post silly quiz results and babble about the trivialities of my life. I do actually keep up with the news, but I don't feel like I usually have any insightful comments about it. If I come up with any I'll post them though.

apples and oranges, cutie.
Date: 2002-11-17 02:56 am (UTC)That guy's webshite is a vain and desperate attempt to appear relevant in a social structure where his peers are a decade younger. With some of these folk, blogging lends some street credit, regardless of actual expertise (sad but true). Combine that with the brutal mentality that "you're only as good as your last consulting gig," and he finds himself constantly hustling to "convince the mokes that he big akamai, not some momona haoli."
That godforsaken blog is nothing but a collection of forced jokes, wisecracks stifled in infancy by a well-timed sip of coffee during some stodgy meeting, and news clippings that catch the eye -- same as a thousand other blogging gwei-los. It has been in and out of production for six years, when it was just a bookmark page. Most of it was crap, and when the archives of the most recent stuff got trashed, the only rescue effort made was to retrieve 1999, as a cautionary example. Employers and customers are never discussed, and co-workers only with direct informed consent.
Personal things are taboo in his writing. you have no such fears, and I was both suprised and impressed by that. Tura's email exchanges back in the 90's felt the same way. I see other journals like yours, but for me, there's no context. to see someone I've known for two thirds of my life open up like that... look -- just don't stop.
And please forgive the gratuitous use of self-referential use of third person pronouns.
The java's still on me, any time you want.

Date: 2002-11-17 10:59 am (UTC)I can understand what you mean, but I don't just want to post about stuff going on, I want to post deep, thought-provoking stuff. Because deep stuff doesn't come to mind often, I often feel just the same - shallow. But every once in awhile I have deep moments that I can share, and I do.
I think these journals/bloggers are different things for different people. You have a lot going on in your life, why wouldn't you want to write about THAT. I also agree that it takes some balls to bare yourself that way.
And hey, it was good to see you last night. See you Tuesday night.
