So, what's your reading "comfort food?" You know, the things you go back and reread over again just because you love them so much. I have some. I don't know if they're all really great literature, but hey, they're what I like when I'm down or bored or in need of distraction. You know...comfort food.

(I know this is a longish list, given that I've included several series. I'm a compulsive and fast reader.)

Nearly any Nero Wolfe books/short stories, by Rex Stout. I've read the whole series at least three times over.

Any Jane Austen, particularly Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility

Daughter of Regals (short story collection) by Stephen R. Donaldson

The Mirror of Her Dreams/A Man Rides through, by Stephan R. Donaldson

Any of the Vorkosigan books, by Lois McMaster Bujold, particularly Komarr and A Civil Campaign

Many John Irving novels, especially The Cider House Rules, A Prayer for Owen Meany, and The Hotel New Hampshire

ANY P.G. Wodehouse.

The Robin Hudson series, by Sparkle Hayter

Ring of Fear, by Anne McCaffery

The first several Honor Harrington books, by David Weber

The Secret Life of Eva Hathaway, by Janice Weber

900 Grandmothers (short story collection) by R.A. Lafferty

Summer Sisters, by Judy Blume

The short stories of Saki (H.H. Munro)

There are almost certainly more, but without getting up and going through my bookshelves, this is all I can think of.

What about you?

I get eyestrain so often (despite keeping up my eye exams/eyegalss prescriptions) that relaxation demands closing my eyes. Music is my "comfort food".

When I read, I like PG Wodehouse, GK Chesterton, PJ O'Rourke, HP Lovecraft, Rex Stout, Dorothy Sayers and Ellis Peters.

I also read F. Paul Wilson and Laurell K. Hamilton, but I have yet to read anything of theirs more than once.

I'm very fond of the Incarnations of Immortality series by Piers Anthony. I'd like to re-read And the Ass Saw the Angel by Nick Cave, but someone never returned it to me. I have to get another copy soon, it's a great read, especially for reading aloud. I read it to [livejournal.com profile] eljoebo and the dialect of the main character is written in, so it was a lot of fun. I also love books by Tom Robbins, but I haven't even read all of the ones I have. I'm a slow reader and have a hard time making time to read. It also tends to put me to sleep unless it's real exciting material. That doesn't help.

The book I reread every few months is the greatest joker stories ever writen. A anthology that is filled with some great writers. i missed out on getting one of my favorite stories out of the book signed at the World horror con because i didn't know the guy would be there. I have always loved the Joker. he is my anti hero. I almost got thrown out of the bat man movie for cheering on the wrong guy. (Hate bat man) i picked the book up the year it come out, actually i was the first to buy a copy that day it was released. It has taken and been my security blanket for over 13 years. I read it all in one week. Its just some thing i had to do. Joe R. Lansdale, Mike Resnik, and a few others have signed the book. I wish that i could get it all signed but that will be impossible. i want the artist to sign it as well.

To name a few...

Most James Michner, although The Source, The Drifters and Hawaii are particular favorites.

The Stand - Steven King I have read it so many times that it is more like visiting friends than reading a book now.

The Rama books-Larry Niven

When I was a teenager I read a novel called Red Sky at Morning over and over and I can't remember the author.

For my basic mind numbing help me relax, romance novels generally do the trick. The little ones, less than 1/2 inch thick. I can generally knock one out in about an hour.

I like Terry Goodkind, Piers Antony, Tolkien (this isn't mind numbing, instead it is quite mind engaging. Not something I can read in bed.), DragonLance, Forgotten Realms, Ravenloft. R.A. Salvatore. Anne Rice. Anne McCaffrey

I have re-read Jane Austen, Dumas, Dickens, Shakespeare, among others, and will probably continue to do so.

Reading is my passion, and I can read anywhere.

This wouldn't be complete w/o mentioning the Harry Potter Books. I read these aloud to my kids. I appreciate that they can enjoy them, yet my husband and I still enjoy it.

When I was in my 20s I read the Amber books, at least the first several, a couple of times through. I had totally forgotten about them though. Maybe it's time to haul them back out.
