R and I took Jesse to see the Broadway touring production of Man of La Mancha tonight.  I'm ashamed to say that I've never read Don Quixote or in fact seen any movie version of it, although I did see the documentary Lost in La Mancha, which was quite good.  Anyway, I hadn't been in a mood to go to a play, but we had bought tickets to the whole Broadway season and they were expensive, so we weren't staying home and wasting that money.   But I was pleasantly surprised.  It was a good production, a great set, and I found the story, which I had previously only had a vague idea of, very appealing.   I was afraid it would be too grown up for Jesse, or at least too boring, but he seemed to like it and didn't get fidgety until very close to the end.  I asked him about it afterward and he seemed to have a good concept of what had happened in the story, which was a very complex story to follow for a kid his age who had no idea of what it would be about to begin with.  The next two shows are Mamma Mia and Spamalot and I expect those to be really fun for all of us.   Jesse begged his Daddy to get season tickets for the 2008 season and of course he caved, yay!, so I guess we're going to musicals for some time to come.

I am SO jealous that y'all get to go see Spamalot!! My mom was going to get us tickets for an anniversary present...but I'll be either birthing at that time or very close to it. She said she would feel jipped if I went into labor in the middle of a musical. *sigh*

Dude, what are the odds you'll be in labor for that two-hour period? She should have gotten you the tickets anyway and then had a backup plan for using them in case you couldn't go!

I totally agree!!

She's going off of the fact that my due date is July 10th and Spamalot is here the 10-15th of July. She thinks there are pretty good odds that I'll either be in labor or still in the hospital recovering. *sigh* I really don't think I'm going to go past 36 weeks, but ah well. I can always catch it another time. I can track down if it's going to Kansas City or Dallas and make a Babymoon out of it. :)

I actually didn't like the Man of La Mancha. I found the main character to be repugnant. He caused amazing amounts of damage to all the people around him simply so he could pursue his dream. I don't think think that the message I was suppposed to walk away with but that is the message I got. I am not surprised that a lot of boomers have a lot of deference for it.

Spamalot was a great deal of fun if you don't take your monty python too seriously. The french taunters are worth the price of admission.

Heh, well, I'm not a Boomer, I'm a Gen X'er, but I was thinking that NFs and NTs (if you follow Keirsey) are likely to take away very different views of the play. My logical minded son, on the way home, expressed that it seemed like the guy was just crazy and he was having a good time, but he got in trouble and died from it. I tried to point out that he lifted other people above themselves through his vision of how things should be. Yes, bad things happened to people, particularly Dulcinea, but in the end she embraced a view of herself that was more than she had thought possible. It seemed life-changing in a good way, though there was trauma along the path to it. As to the bad things that happened to other people, it was made clear that his sidekick had enjoyed the adventures and was no worse for the wear, and whether he embarrassed his niece and her stuck-up fiance, well, not a big concern for me in the greater scheme of things. Anyway, I enjoyed it but I can see how you might not, even if I don't agree with your assessment.

I love going to the shows at the PAC ~ the big ones anyway, the little ones at the small end tend to very from cute to worthless... We saw a couple of Opera's this year and I was impressed that we liked them:) I wasn't sure what to expect. Glad you had a good time!

My kids are going to this season's imagination series, but not next year because they thought it was all girl stuff, or something. You're right, the smaller plays are widely variable in quality. Still, I've seen more good stuff than bad. Jesse is just very much into theatre right now. I've been trying to find things he could audition for, but I'm nervous about it because he's only ever done an audition at his own drama school, which was very laid-back. I'm glad your kids had a good experience with auditioning.

From our experience, the Spotlight has been very laid back and easy for the kids. We tried out for the Wizard of Oz on a last minute whim, and it wasn't half as "scary" as I thought it'd be! They'll be doing auditions for The Little Mermaid next...

We have yet to make any other theater auditions just because of our schedules, but we want to try out Clark Theater too. They are supposed to be really great at teaching and "growing" good actors:)

I just saw an announcement for auditions for children 7-13 for the LOOK production of The Music Man, so I called and asked Jesse if he'd like to try out and he would, so I guess we're going to do that Saturday. I told him not to expect a part, but that it would be good practice auditioning and he seems fine with that. I'm still nervous for him, even though he's not nervous for himself, lol.

My daughter will be attending several of the plays with my father and step mom. She is really looking forward to seeing Spamalot. :) My Dad was nervous about taking her to a play with such adult humor in it. I told him to get real. :)

My daughter and I get to go see Man of La Mancha on Sunday evening, I'm so looking forward to it! It looks like I'm going to get to go to Mamma Mia as well because hubby is a big Abba fan from way back. Now Spamalot I need to find someone to go with me. I'm the only one in my family who wants to see that one. I'm glad you liked it!

I bet you won't have any trouble finding someone to go with you to Spamalot. That one looks popular as all get out; your family must be nutty, lol. It's actually the reason we bought this season, because we wanted to see it so much. The other ones are just gravy.
