lisamoeWe just got back from DFW. It was a pretty grueling trip on the motorcycle, something like 700 miles by the time we were done. but the time in the city was overall very fun. On Friday we went straight to the ginormous Cycle World International Show in Ft. Worth all evening and then went back to the motel and ordered pizza late. The show was a lot of fun and we picked up many brochures, freebies, souveneirs and actual useful things. Fortunately we had brought along an extra bag that we could strap on the back of the bike because we ended up with a lot of stuff by the time the weekend was over.
On Saturday we went down to the cultural district and had lunch at the Cafe Modern in the Ft. Worth Museum of Modern Art. It was sort of expensive, but fabulous food and wonderful service. I felt all ritzy and stuff. Of course the chef broke a wine glass at our table, which went everywhere, but that's a whole 'nother story. It was more funny than distressing. After that we looked around the Modern and saw a lot of Picassos, some Warhol, Lichtenstein, and a lot of art we didn't understand. Also a painting titled "Ferrari" that seems to actually be of a 63 or 64 Corvette. We may write the curator. Or maybe that's the joke and we just didn't understand that either, lol.
After the Modern we went to the Museum of Science and History. I went years ago and they had a really good special exhibit on movie effects. This time they had an ok exhibit on Robots and one on dinosaur archeology, plus the regular science exhibits. I enjoyed it, but it turned out that we took so long there that we only had about half an hour to walk through the Kimball Museum, and we could have taken HOURS there. In the little time we were there we saw Paintings by Rembrandt, Carravagio, Mondrian, more Picasso, de la Tour, Munch, Matisse, El Greco, and Cezanne. Oh, and a James Ensor. I got a postcard of that one for my kids, because they know a song about James Ensor, strangely enough. We also looked through some ancient Chinese, Indian, Greek and Roman art. I am so sorry that we didn't have much time there. Next time I'll know. On the way back to the motel we drove slowly through the Botanic Gardens, which were very pretty.
After some rest, we headed over to Dallas, and went to Medieval Times, where we cheered for a cute long-haired knight and ate dinner with our fingers. Our serving wench was funny and efficient and the whole thing was pretty good. They had a falconer and his falcon flew right over our heads at our table, which was cool. I bought us some tickets (only $2) to the torture chamber afterwards, but it was almost exactly the same display they have at the Castle of Muskogee. It's a good exhibit, but we'd seen most of it. There was some idiot family ahead of us taking a little girl about 6 through and I didn't think that was a good idea, but whatever. Then we went and talked to "our" knight for a few minutes, laughed at but didn't buy the picture they took of us on the way in, and hit the road again for Ft. Worth.
This morning was mostly just travel, but we did get to go to DQ and buy some Texas lottery tickets and some postcards for the kids' collection. I'm glad to be home; I think I'm too old to travel that far sitting in one position, but still, it's much cooler to go to a motorcycle show on an actual motorcycle. Date: 2005-11-07 04:13 am (UTC)The stuff we did saw really was so cool. All the museums in Ft. Worth are in a several block area along with the botanic gardens and stuff, so basically you can just walk from museum to museum and not have to get back in a car. Although I asked the lady at the desk at the Modern if the Museum of Science was within walking distance and she said, "No, you'll want to drive. It's about 3 1/2 blocks." I guess they don't walk much down there. Judging from the massive constant traffic jams, I'd venture to say in fact, that the entire city is in their cars at all times, lol.
Dallas is a whole 'nother set of museums. Maybe next year we'll hit those. :-)
