So tonight the kids and I had some excitement, but not so much in a good way. We were on our way over to R's, going around the one lane ramp from 75 over to the BA near the river, when I realize the car in front of me is swerving. Then I see a medium sized white dog holding a leg up like he's hurt, but standing up. He looks like he's probably been hit. The kids are very upset and so am I, but there's no place to stop on that curve without me getting rear ended and getting the kids killed, so we get off at 13th street and race back down near the expressway, and I park the kids on SW Blvd, scale an embankment in my platform sandals (brilliant, I know) but by the time I get up there (probably 3 minutes tops from when we saw the dog) someone else has already picked him up. I was happy to see there was no blood on the road so maybe he'll be ok and isn't hurt too bad. I have no idea how I would have gotten him back to the car anyway, but we couldn't leave him, you know?

I love you for stopping for a stray dog. :-)

FYI, if that ever happens again, don't get bitten whatever you do, and then if you can securely transport him, call AnimalAid at 744-8280 day or night, and if he's genuinely injured, they'll take him.

Thanks. I would probably have just called the vet our cats go to and asked where to take him. I don't expect this is something that would happen everyday, but maybe I'll go ahead and put that number in my cell just in case. I already know all the rescue organizations for humans, might as well add that.

Fewer and fewer vets are available after hours...a handful will still give out their cell numbers, but not many.
So at night, AnimalAid is about the only option. And even in the daytime, they're about the only place who will take on medical emergencies at no charge.
Granted, if the animal is severely injured and appears unowned (no collar or collar-wear, tattoo, or grooming) then they'll often euthanize.
So if you want to guarantee life, you pretty much have to take on personal care of the injured stray, which most people can't do.

I commend you effort but do hope you take precautions to not get bitten or get run over yourself.

It was good of you to stop. A lot of people would have just kept going.

Thank you, but it wasn't a big deal, anyone here would have tried to help. Anyway one dog my ex-husband and I had was a stray hit by a car that we got from Animal Aid and I'm glad someone rescued her, so I owe it.

Thank you, I'll be careful if it ever happens again.

I don't think I'd relish trying to explain to the kids why we saw a hurt animal and could do something but didn't.

Do you remember a long time ago outside a Starbase meeting I think, we saw a dog get hit by a car and I was so impressed that [livejournal.com profile] jackofalltech ran out there, picked it up and put it in the back of his car (a stationwagon maybe?) and took it to a vet, even though it was bleeding and getting all over his car. I was just a kid then but it made an impression.

Yeah, we had a pretty good evening after that. Tonight I actually have a little money so maybe we'll go to a restaurant they like or something. If you weren't busy and are feeling better and wanted to meet us I'm sure Jack would like to see Conner. He gripes that he doesn't get to see other boys enough since most of our friends have girls.

Aw!! I wish I felt better! I would hate to inflict the evil poo-sickness upon you or the kids. We're (probably) going to Big Splash on Saturday after 4:30pm for the reduced rate.
