Jun. 22nd, 2011 11:39 amMy boss was out of town today, so I called in and took the morning off, since there was no one to say I couldn't. I've just been home spending time with Jesse while Dingo is at Drama Camp. I try to steal as much time as I can during the day to spend with the kids. If I have a windfall of time, like the opportunity to take a long lunch, or a meeting gets out unexpectedly early, or my boss leaves early, I try to come home and hang out with them. I've always done that because I don't like being gone from them for 8 hours a day. I already share custody with R, and 8 hours a day they're asleep, and that just doesn't leave me enough time with them (and they are my favorite people!) so I steal time when I can.
Neither R nor I, when we set up our custody schedule, were willing to be a weekend parent or not see them for several days in a row, so they've always spent one night at my house and then one night at his, but they stay at my house during the day for school, so I can usually spend a little time with them during the day and also after work before they go to R's on his nights. And they call me at work sometimes just to tell me something funny that happened. One reason I've kept the kind of low-stress but low-pay jobs that I have is that they tend to be high-flexibility, and yeah, I could probably earn more money someplace else, but I'd also have to clock in and out and work long hours and I think I'd rather have more time with the kids than any material things.
Anyway, I'm happy for a quiet morning with Jesse. I don't get enough of those, but I'm grateful when I do. I hope when I look back on my life it's full of good memories of time with my kids, even if I never have a fancy house or expensive stuff.
