You wanna know something that annoys me? Made up curse words, that's what. If you feel so strongly that cursing is appropriate, just let go with it. If you don't feel cursing is appropriate for you, or in a certain situation, then don't do it and find some more elegant way to express yourself. But grown people making up silly-sounding words that are almost but not quite genuine curse words just sounds lame. Really.

I say "freakin'" or "flippin'" often... but that's basically because I am generally too pissed off to think of something else to say, and my Dh (and I) frown upon cussing in front of kids. I do find my 16yo dd's friends hilarious in some of the dumb things they think are "okay" to say... and others that are "bad"... such as, "Crap" is "ohmigoshthat'sWRONG" to say, but other, more made up things that resemble 'fuck' or 'damn' are "Well, we're not actually SAYING anything 'bad'"... ugh. Thankfully my dd finds it ridiculous as well, so we can just laugh at the absurdity of it all.

That, and the ones for whom "Fuck" is really REALLY bad, but they'll say "bugger" teehee:) I love the word 'bugger', btw. British cussing sounds so much more fun... sigh...

Exactly. It just doesn't quite carry the weight that the real thing does. Plus, I'm not even sure how to get "fracked."

The frell? What's wrong with made up curse words, gorramit? Sometimes, it's just more fun to use some slagging made up word then the proper curse words...And, in my case, they tend to be geek references anyway.

What gets me are those who think that arse and shite are less severe than ass and shit.

If what you're wanting is to be recognized by other Firefly fans and such, carry on! If you're just out in the regular mundane world and don't want to sound silly, I'd say just stick to the fuck and goddamnit. It all depends on your intent.

I agree with you about people using real naughty words from other cultures and thinking they're somehow less harsh than cursing in American English.
