They Might Be Giants!
May. 25th, 2008 09:58 pmWe're back from Kansas City. R and I took the kids up Friday and went to Worlds of Fun all day. For the coaster fans among you: I got to ride Mamba twice, plus Patriot, Boomerang, Spinning Dragons and Timber Wolf. Mamba was 200+ feet of plain awesome, Patriot was lots of fun, Boomerang was rough for a steel coaster, Spinning Dragons was really cool, but maybe not quite as good as Tony Hawk's Big Spin and TimberWolf was just a good big wooden coaster, rattly and exciting.
After Worlds of Fun, we went downtown to eat at the Red Dragon House, which I highly recommend. We've been eating there for 15 years at least and it's always SO GOOD! After that we checked into the Hyatt Regency at Crown Center and had a good night's sleep until Jesse got up at like 6:30 wanting to do something. We finally got out about 8:00 and went over to the City Market and looked at produce and baked goods and ate at Succotash, which had pancakes bigger than the dinner plates they were served on.
When we got back to the hotel we checked out and headed over to Jingle Jam, which is what we'd come to KC for. It's a big kids' music and arts festival. We hung around there a bit and then went back over to Union Station across the street and spent a couple of hours at Science City, since our Omniplex membership lets us in free, then we had Japanese food at Kabuki, shopped a little at Crown Center, saw a very informative traveling museum exhibit on money (for instance they had $1,000,000 in a case, just to show you what it looked like) and then went back out to Jingle Jam, which was in Crown Center Square.
At Jingle Jam we walked around and looked at booths and bought snacks and Dingo played in the inflatables until about 2 hours before They Might Be Giants was supposed to play. Then Jesse and I got the plan to go sit as far up front as we could and then as people left in the rows ahead of us while other bands were playing, we'd move forward til we got front row seats. Lo and behold, about an hour later we were in the front row awaiting TMBG. In the meantime another band had gotten Dingo up on stage with them (out of like 1000 kids in the audience) to sing and of course he hammed it up and loved it. He's been in theatre and stuff but this was a huge audience and I was a little worried, but neither of my kids has any stage fright. Hand them a microphone and they're in heaven.
They Might Be Giants turned out to be super awesome!!! R and I saw them at the Cains Ballroom here in Tulsa about 14 or 15 years ago (we're old!) and it was so fun to see the kids loving them too. Jesse ended up going up and standing by the stage literally inches from the band for the last half of the concert, and at one point one of them reached his guitar down and let Jesse and a few other kids strum it while he held a chord. I think that's the best thing that's ever happened to Jesse. They played almost all songs I know and I jumped up and down til I managed to hurt my calf again, but hey, what price fun?
After the concert we drove back to Tulsa, after getting mildly lost getting to our expressway, which is stupid because I pretty much know my way around KC but just got discombobulated because I was so tired. The trip back was a little rough on R and I because we were exhausted and we didn't get home til past midnight. The kids slept most of the way, but it was hard to stay awake myself. I frequently do the majority of driving on our trips but I'm grateful R drove the last three hours of this trip because I just could not keep my eyes open.
Anyway, it was a pretty action packed trip for just being there one night. Today was also fairly busy, but more on that later.
