Last night I took Jesse to try out for Pinocchio. There were about 40 people trying out for 17 parts and there will be another audition tonight, so we're not hopeful. Jesse did pretty well, I thought, but a lot of the kids already knew the director and I'm sure they'll be favored over the kids who just walked in. A lot of the families knew each other through this theater and they were joking with the director like they were already sure of getting a part. But I guess it was good experience for this kind of cattle call audition even if he doesn't get anything. The only other audition he's done had appointments and you auditioned only in front of the music director for the show, so now he'll have experience with both kinds of tryouts. They had non-speaking parts for little kids but Dingo didn't want to try out when he found out the rehearsals would be 2 hours. He's pretty aware of his own limitations on sitting still. A friend of ours from Campfire brought her daughter too, which was good as I had someone to sit with while Jesse was doing his thing.

The fun thing about the audition was that Jesse ran into this girl he was in love with last summer. She was in his musical theater camp and they agreed to get married, had their Disney honeymoon planned out, everything. It was really cute. Well, he lost her number after that camp and hasn't seen her since the end of last summer. So I'm watching the auditions and there's this pretty little girl that looks familiar and she keeps squinting at Jesse in a weird way and at break she comes over ands asks him who he is. I didn't know he even remembered her, but he did and they gave each other the biggest hug and she kissed him on the cheek!

I had told the boys they could have ice cream on the way home, so Jesse asked her Mom if they could go with us and she said yes. She told me, aside, that Kelli (the little girl) had talked about Jesse ever since that camp and told her they were getting married and she had wondered what happened to him. So anyway, we went to Braums afterward so they could talk a while more. Jesse rode with Kelli and her Mom upon Kelli's request, and the whole time we were at Braums, she sat right next to Jesse and just sparkled. She is the cutest tiny little girl. She's 9 and her hair and eyes are as dark as Jesse's, but she's a full head shorter and told me she weighs 51 pounds (which is less than Dingo, who's 6.) Anyway, she told Jesse he was her "very best boyfriend" and that she likes him better than any other boy. Jesse, with his customary sentimentality said "What? You DO?!?" Anyway, Jesse likes her too, though perhaps not with quite the same degree of certainty. They exchanged phone numbers and everyone seemed happy, though Kelli's Mom and I both put the kibosh on Kelli's plan to invite Jesse and Dingo to a sleepover. She's a very self-assured and forthright little girl. I'm not sure what about Jesse has captivated her cause he seems like just a little math nerd to me, but she has it bad, in a 9 year-old way. Anyway, the whole thing was too cute.

How crazy is that? J had a girl mooning all over him last year too... a much too "forthright" girl we know. I always thought it'd be K getting all the girls, but J (our little science geek) is the one the girls seem to gravitate towards. Go figure.

Our kids have auditioned for three things... and they've all been the looooong, drawn out cattle call type auditions. I think my kids would probably be too nervous to audition with no one else there!:) I wouldn't want to be a casting director for anything, because if I already knew kids that I'd worked with and KNEW they were responsible, would learn their lines and show up... I'd have a REALLY hard time not favoring them. I know Sheila, with AinW said she almost didn't choose Paris, even though she was really the best one for the role just because she didn't want anyone to think she'd chosen her because she already knew her. That would have sucked.

Anyway, don't know why I'm rambling on... found your kid-love experience cute:)
