Aug. 4th, 2006 09:18 amHahaha, I've been really worried about the clinic employees walking by my office and noticing that I'm not actually all that busy. Well, I've been wearing heels to work as lot of days (trying to make a good impression this first few weeks) and it turns out that I'm frightening the clinic employees because every time I walk down the hall to go to the bathroom or something they think an administrator is coming out of the other part of the building, since everyone in the clinic itself wears sneakers or crocs. Maybe I'll start wearing sandals and stop worrying about the clinic employees walking by and we'll all be less stressed.
So I went to a large function last night for my Dad's side of the family at Johnny Carinos. The family is, by and large, strict Southern Baptists which means you can't even order a drink to get you through the evening with them. My cousin Karen, when I arrived dressed in my customary demure way (not!) with my tattoo showing, said "well, at least it takes the pressure off me." She's not really all that good a girl, but next to me she seems that way, and she knows it. My aunt, who hadn't noticed my tattoo in the three years I've had it, said I was grounded for getting it. (Yay, does that mean I get to stay in my room and sleep?) Everyone was pretty nice though. I kind of like being the black sheep of the family, but knowing they still love me cause we're family. My kids acted *great*, much better than my various cousins' kids the same age and it was remarked on by several people. That must just mystify everyone, as I alone in the family don't spank my kids or take them to church. (Cause you know church kids never get in trouble, lol.)
Looking forward to the weekend.

Date: 2006-08-04 02:38 pm (UTC)You may just get in trouble by the heel-wearing savages.
Why?
Because there should be a rule (there is...I'm just not sure WHOM has the rule...I know it's not HIPAA) that medical staff are not allowed to wear sandals or any open toed shoes. Why? Needles and other sharps that are already used could be accidentally left out...
I can't believe they're able to wear those ugly rubber mule things that come in a variety of sherbert-y colors because they have holes in them.
I usually just wore sneakers like the rest of them and was VERY happy for the comfort on those hard floors...
But I love the fact that you're scaring them with the heels!! LOL!

Footwear
Date: 2006-08-04 05:27 pm (UTC)short heels, enough to give you height and still be comfy, but not so tall as to fall from and break a hip are good (1, 1-1/2, and 2 inch) looks good for the folks above you in hierarchy and just enough umph for underlings to continue looking up. (Food chain thing).
Especially, assuming you may want a promotion sometime...always dress one level above where you are - if appropriate/acceptable for the work involved.
There are lots of professional looking sneakers available these days...read "basic black with skid resistant soles". I have never felt sandals belonged at work...they're either too casual or too dressy...as for crocs- they belong in the garden pulling weeds.
At the end of the day, its whatever you feel best with - that meets minimum requirements for your job and where you want to go in your profession.
Slapping on some sandals is easy but being professional takes some thought.
I have always envied your kids, lisamoe.
SweetiePie is all gimme gimme gimme and HoneyBear mumbles and has fits when you tell him 'no'. he throws a fit at the drop of a hat. I spend most of my time being tired and trying to understand what happened.

Date: 2006-08-05 02:51 am (UTC)Thanks for the advice. :-) Fortunately, dress codes in social work are pretty lax. And there's no promotion to be had from this position so I don't have to dress to impress too much. Everyone around me is in scrubs or casual office wear except for the VP who's officed in our building. I just kind of figured til I knew everyone better and was more comfortable it would be better to be a little more formal than a little less.
