Jan. 15th, 2006 08:22 pmThis afternoon Scott and I went to the Circle Cinema and saw The Ritchie Boys, which is a really interesting film about these young men who fled Europe in the 30s and moved to America and then enlisted in the US military. They were trained at Camp Ritchie, MD in intelligence and sent back to Europe during WWII as POW interregators, propagandists and intelligence gatherers because they were native speakers of German and other languages. They were mostly Jews and were from Austria and Germany, but some were French or other nationalities. Their stories were just fascinating, both the war stories and the stories of how they were refugees here to begin with. After the film they had a Tulsan, Kenneth Renberg, who had been a Ritchie boy, speak for a while about his experiences. Apparently the film, which is English but was made by a German filmmaker, doesn't yet have an American distributor, but they got Mr. Renberg to help them bring it to Tulsa after someone at the Circle saw it at a film festival, so anyway, it's probably not on anywhere else in the US currently. I'm glad we got to see it.
