Jesse's Test Scores
Jul. 18th, 2007 11:43 amI got Jesse's IOWA test scores today. Just as I suspected, he's a curious mix of genius/idiot, lol. His math scores were all well above grade level and he scored as high as 9-9 grade equivalent in math problem solving and data interpretation. Then he scored at 2.7 and 3.0 in punctuation and capitalization respectively, so he's essentially five years ahead in math and two years behind in some of his language arts, though he did score at grade level on vocabulary and usage at least. He scored at 6th to 8th grade level in maps, social studies and science, which is about what I expected. He's good at that stuff.
The test subsets that he got 100 percent correct on were: capitalizing dates and holidays, number properties and operations, algebra, measurement, single-step problem solving, math approaches and procedures, reading amounts, comparing quantitative relationships, earth and space science, and geography. No big surprises there.
As far as subsets he did poorly on, he wasn't so hot at reference material usage, though he did fine on "searching for information." I'm going to have to take him down to the library reference section and go over what's what, I guess. He also did poorly on basically all the punctuation subsets, like commas, apostrophes, quotes, etc. which is not a surprise either. Jesse hates to write and frankly, isn't that good at it. Verbally, he's very articulate, but getting it down on paper has always been a huge challenge for him. I guess we're just going to have to press that point this coming school year. He doesn't need to be Shakespeare, but he does need to be solidly on grade level if he's going to be able to write papers and essays in the future without a copy editor.
I feel bad that I'm so disappointed about his language arts skills. It's overshadowing how good I feel about his math scores. Overall the language arts skills weren't that bad, but I know he's smarter than that overall. He reads for content well if he's interested in the subject, but for some reason he just hasn't picked up any writing skills to speak of. I guess I shouldn't expect him to be awesome at everything, just being awesome at the math, science and geography is more than some people will ever have, but still, I guess I'm a little weirded out because English was always my best subject and I kind of expected him to have gotten a little bit of that from me. I guess he's his father's son, what with the good math and the not caring about English, lol.
